Apple is on Santa's Nice List

So we have a couple of tiny geeks in training who live in our house. As I have mentioned before, we grew our family through international adoption and our babies are cute little elfish creatures, ages 2 and 4. Now, our youngest has a significant vision impairment due to Albinism. The iPad, which was already an MVP in this house, has become a real lifeline of learning for our little geekling. Even at her tender age it has allowed her to experience and learn things visually in a way that works for her. Many kids with visual issues have found the iPad to be a life-altering adaptive tool.

Well, woe to the geek republic, my little girl dropped it. It was in a Targus case but it landed hard on it's edge on the top of the table. It wasn't a big fall but just hard enough and at the right angle to create a spider webbing across the glass.

That night we packed up the collective and drove to the nearest Apple store, which is about an hour away. I was totally prepared to pay whatever it took for a repair after we spent the whole day listening to a very upset little girl cry over the iPad being off limits. We only allow her two short iPad sessions a day but once you say no to a toddler over something she had come to rely on....life can be HELLISH.

So there I was, sitting in the Apple Store, waiting for my genius with my little creature tucked in her stroller. I was pacifying her with my iPhone and she was using it like a PRO. Half the people in there looked at her with nerdy admiration (those are my peeps) the other half were various people who scowled at me for allowing my child to place a screen so close to her face. I forgive them. They just don't know that that is how she sees. I still want to karate chop people in the throat from time to time but generally I stay calm.

Anyhoo, a manager came over to chat with me and she saw my little girl and I explained about her vision issues. The manager, who had just returned from opening an Apple Store in Hong Kong, knew the province in China that my daughter is from, she understood not only the complications people with Albinism encounter in China but also the unique vision issues these kids have. It was amazing to me. Her interest, compassion and spirit were just wonderful. :)

She informed me that Apple makes it a priority to keep it's technology available to kids like mine and that she would be happy to replace our ipad2 for free. I was stunned. And overjoyed and a little verklempt. I can never thank this person enough. It was so generous and kind hearted. To the rest of the world I'm just an ordinary mom with a cute blond kid who lets her baby place technology too close to her face. This person saw past that with compassion and understanding.

Now, this is not the end of the story. In my Apple-blissed state I left my wallet there. I had no idea where I had left it, I just knew it was lost for two weeks now. The only cards in it were a gift card and my insurance card because for some reason I put my debit in my pocket. Yesterday we get an email from our health insurance company. An Apple rep had found my wallet, waited to see if I would come in to retrieve it and when I didn't they contacted my health insurance company and asked them to track me down and they did! Again, shocked at the kindness and effort of everyone involved.

Over the years I have spend a LOT of money on Mac products. Yes, I will wait in line for a new release and if I ever met The Woz in a line I would likely spaz out, drop my iPhone and have to purchase another. I am convinced that this is one company with it's moral compass still intact. Now, I know that twenty other people will email me saying just the opposite. Blah blah blah.

Thank you Apple for being so generous, making products that are bordering on magical and for employing such decent human beings!

Epic Web Cam Security Failure

Ok, so a while back we had a small crime rash in our rural neck of the woods. We responded by purchasing a webcam from a large, well trusted company and within a day realized it didn't have the night vision we needed to protect our property. So we returned it.

So recently we started to get email alerts for motion detected on this camera that we no longer owned! Apparently the company resold it and didn't delete our email that was attached to it when we created the online account which we can no longer access. So we have gotten a fair number of pictures of a mysterious wine cellar. Most benign....one questionable. It's incredibly well stocked but not frequently visited so I don't think it's a restaurant. However, it's incredibly big for a private collection. I can't help but wonder whose it is. I like to imagine it belongs to Steve Wozniak and that is his private chef and/or various staff. I feel quite sure it is.

The irony is that this camera was placed in an attempt to INCREASE security. Then it gets sent to me. Then I post it to the internets as a warning to all of you! (and because I'm a voyeur pig who is enjoying this all too much)

The decent thing to do would be to notify the company of this horrible lapse in security. I will. I will.
But first please, please, internet Gods....please let someone smoke a big fat doobie or have sex first. Angry, secret, screw the boss, wine cellar sex. Please.

I am never buying a stand alone webcam again. How do I know this wasn't resold to me and someone has pictures of me naked on my couch, picking my nose while I watch Tosh.0 ? It's disturbing....it's all just deeply disturbing.

Update: For those of you having a moral crisis over this situation....I emailed the maker of the camera. Perhaps they don't read their emails. Maybe they are too busy? Unless I figure out who this is I might be getting these pictures forever (I hope). :)

Cherese and Christopher ~ Another Geek Wedding!

Dear Sweet On Geeks:

Hello! My name is Cherese. I had been through a difficult divorce and was lonely. I really wanted to meet someone that I could share my love of books, science fiction and comic books with. I really wanted to meet someone who would appreciate me for me. I was disappointed by the traditional dating scene- blind dates, set ups by friends and *gasp* the club scene had become stale. Having grown bored and frustrated, I had almost decided to become a "cat lady."

One late August evening in 2007, I was visiting my grandmother after work. We saw the news story about Sweet On Geeks on ABC's "World News Tonight with Charles Gibson." I turned to my grandmother and said, "I'm going to join that web site and find my soul mate." She smiled and said, "But you aren't a geek." I laughed and replied, "You have to say that because you are my granny. I'm as geek as they come."

A few days later, I took a chance and created a profile. I began receiving emails and "winks" from some really interesting users. Then, on September 30, 2007, I received a "wink" from a user named Christopher, AKA "Raintree." I immediately took note because it was a Holy Hand Grenade from "Monty Python's "Holy Grail," one of my favorite movies. I decided to email him a reply.

Christopher and I began emailing each other regularly and soon, those emails turned to phone calls. We discovered that we were very similar intellectually and spiritually. We had so many things in common- including our birthdays, our hometown and even a mutual friend! I could hold conversations with Christopher that were interjected with "Star Wars" quotes and he didn't scoff. We became instant best friends! Soon, we decided to meet face. A two hour drive south for me and a two hour drive north for him and we met. The chemistry was instant! That was October 12, 2007.

Fast forward into the future...

I relocated and we spent the next couple of years falling in love and building a wonderful relationship. On September 10, 2011 at noon (Yes, 9/10/11 @12), Christopher and I were married in Cleveland, Ohio. My daughter, gave me away! We had a wonderful ceremony that was as unique and memorable as the way we met. My grandmother danced at our reception!

Having just celebrated our one month wedding anniversary and the fourth anniversary of the day we met, Christopher and I agreed that it was time that we shared our story. Thank you, Sweet On Geeks for creating a place where two people who, were often misunderstood or out on the fringe of the social scene, could have a place to meet just for them. When I created my profile, I said that I wanted to find, "...the dork of my dreams." Not only did I find my dream geek but, I found my best friend, my soul mate and the love of my life. Christopher and I are very happy and we are looking forward to our future together. Thank you so much for being that catalyst that lead us to one another.

Hello Joyce!

Mark and I met on Sweet on Geeks way back in Sept, 2008. It took me FOREVER to respond to him, because I was so busy at the time, but eventually I got around to it! If you or someone you know is a plane geek, you know or see from his handle, which has PDX in it, that PDX indicates that Mark was in Portland, OR, when we met. I was in Washington State. Mark sent me a message--an answer to two trivia items I posted in my profile about where my cats' geeky names came from.

At the time, I was very much NOT interested in having a long-distance relationship and expressed that thought to him early on. He answered that he thought that was just fine, and that he still was interested in being friends. Reluctantly, I agreed... and there began the relationship with the most wonderful man I've ever known. I had to go to a conference down in Portland, in November, and we met for coffee. It turned into dinner, then drinks, then we shut the bar down, chatting! To this day, we laugh at the ending to that night, though--I got quite offended, thinking the date had not gone well when after hours together, he only offered me a stiff and awkward hug goodnight! Turns out, the desk person at the hotel I was staying was smirking at him, and he got all self-conscious! We became friends anyway, though, I stopped seeing anyone else in late November, and by December both of us wanted more than friends. By January 2009 (!), we were engaged and he moved to Washington. This even encouraged Mark's best friend to try online dating--although not being a geek, he went with another popular site. Within months, he, too, had found his sweetheart and they just got married in July 2011.

We had planned to get married that Christmas, but my job ended in June and things were really stressful for a while. I got a job offer to teach in Anchorage, AK, and after much discussion about the bad economy, we decided to take it! Just before we moved, though, I broke my arm. We decided to go anyway! We moved up to Alaska in September 2009 and Mark almost immediately found a computer networking job. Then, instead of a Christmas wedding, I had a Christmas surgery to repair my arm. Mark was there for me through thick and thin, and nursed me through everything. By the next summer I was well, and once again began making plans for a holiday wedding. We were married in December 2010, in Las Vegas. 22 people came from both sides of our families! It was a blast, and seeing Vegas at New Year's was awesome. We still live in Anchorage and are planning to remain there for a few years yet, at least until the economy improves down in the Lower 48.

HELLO GEEKS!!!
Just a quick note to tell you about some amazing and wonderful developments. We've had several recent marriages and the site is crazy busy right now. First Varoujan and Allison....
Varoujan was one of our earliest members and is an amazing, brilliant man. He finally found his intergalactic princess in Miss Allison, who by all reports is also brilliant and amazing. We are all so happy for them and wish them all the very best in life! Congratulations from SOG!

Then we have Diana and Miguel whose geek love story has gone GLOBAL! They are the now famous, "Married by a Computer" couple and SOG is so happy to be able to say they met on our site! The story is that Miguel coded his own minister, "Reverend Bit", to officiate at their wedding. It just seemed appropriate in honor of the way they met, the importance of technology in their lives and in the spirit of their geek love to have a computer be a part of the ceremony. Their story hit the newswire last Sat. and it has been picked up all over the world. CNET, Gizmodo, CNN, MSNBC, and hundreds more. This morning I found it translated into Vietnamese. Geek love resonates globally. I think we are one of the few niches that knows no geographic or ethnic boundaries. We are our own race! The site is swarming with international geeks right now so if you haven't been back in a while, now is the perfect time to update your profile and check in. I hear Diana and Miguel are doing a morning show in Australia via skype. AMAZING and wonderful! Congrats to them both on their marriage and we wish them every happiness!

The same heartfelt congrats goes out to two other, slightly less public SweetonGeeks couples who tied the knot. First, Mike and Jasmine. They privately shared their wedding pics with me and I cried. It was stunning. Love, love, love them. Our other couple is Amanda and Mark who overcame the long distance internet dating thing and now live happily ever after in Alaska. I will share their story soon on the blog with pics! :) Geek love can overcome anything!

Not all of us are the shiny, gorgeous, perfect creatures you see on the Match commercials. Many of us are average, regular, ordinary but that doesn't mean that to the right person we won't be PERFECT! There is a lid for every pot or in our case....a dongle for every USB.

If computers can create friends for you, why can't they create ministers?

This was the philosophical question that inspired Miguel Hanson, a Houston-based web developer and IT consultant as he contemplated his wedding.

As the Associated Press tells it, Hanson couldn't find an associate who would officiate at the betrothal to high school teacher Diana Wesley. So he said to himself: "Wait a minute, I am a Web developer and IT consultant. I am a Master of the Universe. One minister, coming up."

The first thought you might have if you were to create a virtual Man of God might be an appropriate name. How about Father Real-Time? Or the Bishop Apple? Hanson's choice was Rev. Bit.

So, at yesterday's ceremony, Rev. Bit was to greet the 30 or so guests, tell them a few stories about the happy couple, and then lead them through their "I do"'s.

I am delighted to report that Hanson is a geek with a sense of humor and not merely because he met his lovely bride on a site called "Sweet on Geeks" (motto: A Space Where Gray Matters.").

For he programmed Rev. Bit to declare at that most poignant moment during the ceremony when last objections may be raised: "If anyone here has anything to say that might change their minds or has any objections, they do not want to hear it and I will not recognize your objections since Miguel has programmed me to only recognize his commands."

You might be wondering how Rev. Bit knew when to pause so that the congregation could, well, say what it has to say. Hanson said that a little wireless mouse upon his person designed to keep the Virtual Reverend on the straight and narrow. (Should you be wondering about Hanson's full feelings about computer equipment, I believe this is his Web site. There is even a picture of him and his Diana.)

I am sure that you will join me in wishing this enterprising couple a wonderful marriage. I would suggest, however, that, should their marriage progress in that direction, a virtual midwife might be a little harder to design.

A sweet, intelligent, grossly underestimated guy who will appreciate you for your intellect and be turned on by the fact you KNOW what "Towel Day" is in reference to. It will give him chub. You will be worshipped. THAT is the guy you will one day want to make little Ewoks with. Think about it.

NO wait....don't think about it. Cheese Tesselazation Sighting #1

Recently I wrote about this cartoon and it's observation about the illogical way Subway layers it's cheese. Then today on the SOG Facebook Fanpage a roving geek reported this unbelievable sighting. PC World Magazine did a roundup of dating sites and here is what they had to say about SweetonGeeks:

Who you can expect to find: Geeks, especially girl geeks.

How much it'll cost you: You can see people's profiles for free, but if you want to send a message, it'll cost you $5/month for a full membership.

Sweet on Geeks' tagline is "a space where gray matters." The site's owner, Joyce Dales, created the geek-specific dating site in 2007--she was inspired to do so by her own story, in which she met a geek online and noted that it was hard to find geeks on the Internet (of all places!). The 27,000-member site is particularly balanced in the male-to-female ratio, unlike a lot of places on the Internet, and Dales makes sure she actively markets the site to women.

Sweet on Geeks features a simple, basic layout that's reminiscent of an early (circa 2000) HTML page. Although signing up is free, you'll need a full membership to take advantage of the site's messaging features, and fairly quick, even though a picture (or an avatar of some sort) is required. The initial sign-up sheet puts it all out there, and allows you to enter as much or as little the profile information as you like.

There are no toggles for some of the basics (such as whether you're a drinker/smoker or not), just text boxes for you to describe how you feel about the issues. In other words, Sweet on Geek is less of a matchmaking site--it doesn't give you compatibility scores--and more of a social networking site. Accordingly, profiles can be customized with status updates, blog posts, and friend feeds.

Searching for geeks is basic, and you are able to search within X miles of a zip code. You can also search for geeks by keywords. As for the people you'll find here--the good news is that most of them fill out their profiles, so you'll know a lot about their personalities (or lack thereof). The bad news is that a lot of them also use avatars as their pictures, so if you're shallow...well, perhaps you shouldn't be on a geeky dating site in the first place.

Sarah's take: It's much more about social networking than matchmaking or dating. I think it's weird that you can't filter out searches by, say, nonsmokers.

Alex's take: There's something very charming about Sweet on Geeks; it's a small social network in which the founder still actively participates, and the absence of checklists in favor of text fields seems like an earnest attempt to encourage meaningful discussion. If you're looking to dip your toe in the online dating pool but feel intimidated by the size of a free site like OKCupid (see below), Sweet on Geeks might be the perfect fit.

I think we fared pretty well. There's some stuff to work on, as always, but we got props for the girl geek ratio which I have busted my hump to achieve, thank you very much, and I love being thought of as charming. "Hello, I'm Joyce and I'll be your host during your search for nerdy nookie." :) Yup. I want people to feel at home, feel welcome and feel included. I hope to continue making Sweet on Geeks the home of Geek Love.

Wired Magazine just featured a brilliant article by Patton Oswalt titled Wake Up Geek Culture. It's Time to Die.

He basically laments the horrifying mainstreaming of all the things that seem to epitomize old school geek culture. Like hanging around in a cloak, quoting Monty Python with your other non-sex having friends in 1987. (Sigh. Good times.)

Here's a snippet of this hysterical and insightful essay:

The problem with the Internet, however, is that it lets anyone become otaku about anything instantly. In the ’80s, you couldn’t get up to speed on an entire genre in a weekend. You had to wait, month to month, for the issues of Watchmen to come out. We couldn’t BitTorrent the latest John Woo film or digitally download an entire decade’s worth of grunge or hip hop. Hell, there were a few weeks during the spring of 1991 when we couldn’t tell whether Nirvana or Tad would be the next band to break big. Imagine the terror!
But then reflect on the advantages. Waiting for the next issue, movie, or album gave you time to reread, rewatch, reabsorb whatever you loved, so you brought your own idiosyncratic love of that thing to your thought-palace. People who were obsessed with Star Trek or the Ender’s Game books were all obsessed with the same object, but its light shone differently on each person. Everyone had to create in their mind unanswered questions or what-ifs. What if Leia, not Luke, had become a Jedi? What happens after Rorschach’s journal is found at the end of Watchmen? What the hell was The Prisoner about?
Why create anything new when there’s a mountain of freshly excavated pop culture to recut, repurpose, and manipulate on your iMovie?
None of that’s necessary anymore. When everyone has easy access to their favorite diversions and every diversion comes with a rabbit hole’s worth of extra features and deleted scenes and hidden hacks to tumble down and never emerge from, then we’re all just adding to an ever-swelling, soon-to-erupt volcano of trivia, re-contextualized and forever rebooted. We’re on the brink of Etewaf: Everything That Ever Was—Available Forever.
I know it sounds great, but there’s a danger: Everything we have today that’s cool comes from someone wanting more of something they loved in the past. Action figures, videogames, superhero movies, iPods: All are continuations of a love that wanted more. Ever see action figures from the ’70s, each with that same generic Anson Williams body and one-piece costume with the big clumsy snap on the back? Or played Atari’s Adventure, found the secret room, and thought, that’s it? Can we all admit the final battle in Superman II looks like a local commercial for a personal-injury attorney? And how many people had their cassette of the Repo Mansoundtrack eaten by a Walkman?
Now, with everyone more or less otaku and everything immediately awesome (or, if not, just as immediately rebooted or recut as a hilarious YouTube or Funny or Die spoof), the old inner longing for more or better that made our present pop culture so amazing is dwindling. The Onion’s A.V. Club—essential and transcendent in so many ways—has a weekly feature called Gateways to Geekery, in which an entire artistic subculture—say, anime, H. P. Lovecraft, or the Marx Brothers—is mapped out so you can become otaku on it but avoid its more tedious aspects.

It's so true. So very, very true. One of the commenters on the original article summed up our collective geek pain with this:

Posted by Ramonagirl: I remember responding to the news that the Lord of the Rings series was being made into a movie with equal parts joy and blinding, jealous, protectiveness. It simply wasn’t fair that there was an entire generation of kids that were going to get to learn about middle earth without having to slog through the tens of thousands of words it took just to build the outermost layer of that world. And boy howdy did they love it. But you ask any one of them about the barrow-downs or Goldberry, and they just stare blankly at you until their phone beeps with a new Facebook message.

As Ramonagirl points out there is nothing that strikes fear into the heart of the geek like when you first hear that something you love, something that defines your soul is about to become a collectible cup at Burger King and has a billion "Likes" on facefart.

But we shouldn't rush to redefine ourselves in order to remain original or to avoid becoming (horrors) mainstream. The fact is that we are the ones who love first and love longest....long after the masses have turned their backs and sent their LOTR sheets to goodwill. We have a depth of passion, a level of obsession for our geekery that survives well after the straights have had their little nergasm and gone back to watching reruns of Grays Anatomy.

As Jane Austen wrote: "The one claim I shall make for my own is that we love longest, when all hope is gone."

I think she was speaking of Geeks. Geeks suffer from true love and true love lasts forever.

Actor Leslie Nielsen dies of complications from pneumonia

Actor Leslie Nielsen, best known for his film roles in "Airplane" and "The Naked Gun" series, died Sunday of complications from pneumonia, his family said.

Nielsen, 84, died in a hospital near his home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, surrounded by his wife and friends.

"In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name to the charity of your choice," the family said in a statement.

Dear SweetonGeeks,

It has been ages since I've logged on and I am impressed at how the site has grown. I wanted to let you know that I just got engaged to the man I met on this site a little over three years ago. We have been together for just over three years. Our first date was at Chicago's Navy Fear (a Halloween-themed pirate ship at Chicago's Navy Pier.) I had more fun with him in the first 20 minutes of our date than I had had on my last three dates combined. Our shared geek interests include STAR WARS, STAR TREK, HARRY POTTER, and THE BIG BANG THEORY. He introduced me to IRON MAN and other comic movies but I think I'll let him keep his actual comic books and Dungeon's & Dragons On-line all to himself. Much like he does with my crochet hobby and X-FILES & STARGATE obsession. We've just started planning our wedding. I know that geekiness will be a part of it but not sure how yet. My hope is that all the other geeks on SOG will realize that whatever it is that makes them feel like a freak will be the reason that someone is going to love them. I'm not sure if you keep track of success stories like some of the sites do but I am very happy that Sweet On Geeks helped me meet a man I love this much.

The only way to relieve the torment is to get up, empty the bladder, drink the coffee, read the paper, run the treadmill, perform the animal sacrifice, paint the chicken blood on the groin and call upon the demonic spirits to bring you back.

When I'm not working on The Big Bang Theory, I work on other TV shows. One of those shows gets a lot of bad press. Sometimes, when I read the very unkind things written about that show, I'll remember the words of a sleazy music manager I was briefly associated with back in my rock 'n' roll days. The guy was right out of central casting. Bald, middle-aged, pot-bellied and sucking on a cheap cigar, he would sit behind his metal desk in his ratty little office and pontificate to dumbass musicians hungry for career guidance. One of his speeches has remained vivid in my memory for thirty-five years. He said, to a soon-to- be-nonexistent, dumbass power trio I was then a part of, "Boyz, if halfs da peoples loves ya, and halfs da peoples hates ya, you're a star!" At the time I had no idea what he was talking about. It wasn't until fifteen years later when I was writing for a TV show called Roseanne that I figured it out. I was once again reminded of all this when the star of the show I was talking about earlier came out for a curtain call in front of a packed studio audience. They went wild with applause. I looked at the man taking the bow and thought, "there is a big star." Then I looked up at the screaming, cheering audience and thought, "there are halfs da peoples.""

Following Kaley Cuoco's horseback riding injury, I've instituted new rules governing acceptable leisure activities for the cast of The Big Bang Theory.

1. No friggin' horses. This includes those found on merry-go-rounds and in front of supermarkets.

2. The only motorcycle you can get on is the one you're accidentally crushing in your big-ass, air-bagged SUV.

3. All cast member motor vehicles must adhere to U.S. Army guidelines for attacking Kandahar. (Galecki's Tesla is a terrifically fuel efficient vehicle but is essentially a hundred thousand dollar go-cart. From now on it is only to be used for backing down his driveway and retrieving mail.)

4. The only permissible boating activity at Comic-Con is in your hotel room bathtub.

5. Alcohol should only be ingested at home, and while seated in a big comfy chair. Wild and carefree dancing that celebrates your incredible and well-deserved success is only allowed on New Year's Eve, and only with a sober celebrity parasitic flunky to lean on.

6. And finally, sexual acts must be performed while horizontal. Certain high-risk Kama Sutra positions might be allowed, but only after consultation with Chuck Lorre. Like with dancing, a spotter might be required.

Harry Potter Geeks Unite ~ A Review of the Wizarding World

Taking that one step that separates The Wizarding World of Harry Potter from The Lost Continent, you’re immediately transported from your ordinary, mundane existence, into a new, wonderful world created by J.K. Rowling. You’re no longer in sunny Orlando, Florida. Instead, you’re now in the wintery village of Hogsmeade. It seems almost hard to believe, but there is snow on the rooftops of the surrounding buildings, and on this relatively cool Florida morning, it’s easy to believe that you’ve left the warm climate for a much colder one. Upon entering Hogsmeade, the first thing you’ll notice, aside from the snowy rooftops, is the Hogwarts Express. The first thought that comes to mind is: ‘when do we leave?’ But wait, there’s a lot to see before stepping foot on Hogwarts grounds, so let’s take a second to look around all the places in Hogsmeade that we fell in love with in the books and movies. The first shop that you’ll come to is Zonko’s Joke Shop, which brings to mind the loveable Fred and George Weasley. When you enter the shop, true to the books and movies, toys and novelty items are stacked from floor to ceiling. Zonko’s offers everything from Extendable Ears and pygmy puffs to Jacob’s Ladders and novelty hats. And for the more tame person in your life, there are simple, black coffee mugs with ‘Zonko’s’ running down the side of the mug. And the look of the store isn’t the only thing that is brought to life, but looking around, you can’t help but notice all the wizards ready to help you with your shopping needs. The costumes are authentic and really help to bring to life Harry’s world. One very cool thing about Zonko’s is the purchasing of a pygmy puff. How is that cool? Before they will let you leave with your brand new ‘pet,’ you have to give it a name, and then, the wizard ringing up your purchase will announce to both shops that (insert pygmy puff’s name) has found a new home. They really make it a special experience! If you can tear yourself away from Zonko’s long enough, you’ll notice that the joke shop is connected with everyone’s favorite candy store: Honeydukes. In here, you will find anything and everything to satisfy your sweet tooth, and yes, that includes chocolate frogs! Honeydukes also offers up cauldron cakes, chocolate wands, Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans, and Pumpkin Juice. And for the muggles that are unsure of these sweets, there are also treats that you can find in your local candy shop, or grocery store; lollipops, fudge, rock candy, and many other favorites.
Once you step outside the shops, you’ll notice a cart selling a few different beverages, but namely, butter beer. Yes, that drink that was ever so popular in the series is finally available to those fans that have wanted to try it since they first read about it. Butter beer is offered ‘regular,’ frozen, and/or in a souvenir mug, and there are plenty of places around the Wizarding World that give you a chance to try out this beverage. And let me tell you, the claims of how good butter beer is are definitely true! I’ve got to admit that, while I was looking forward to trying it, I was a little leery just because you don’t know what to expect. I got the regular, which is cold, just not frozen, and my friend got the frozen. The best way to describe it is to compare it to butterscotch. But, it’s not an overpowering taste. You can have a good meal and drink a glass of butter beer and it doesn’t conflict, taste wise. Also, there is NO way to drink butter beer and not have a foam mustache after, unless you use a straw. I would suggest, if you haven’t gone to visit the Wizarding World, and you’re wondering about the souvenir mugs, while I love everything they had, there was no way we were going to pay $8.50 for butter beer in a souvenir mug. It was a clear mug with basically a sticker across it. Just not worth the money, especially when there were millions of other really awesome things to spend your money on. The Wizarding World also offered up pumpkin juice in bottles that had a pumpkin on the top as the lid. Cute bottles, but we didn’t try the pumpkin juice. Next time, definitely. Of course they also offered other beverages if those from the franchise didn’t sound like they were up your alley.

The next building you come to in your journey is The Three Broomsticks where the famous trio would go on their trips to Hogsmeade, and it looks just the same as it does in the movies. The only difference is the queue to order your food and beverages. The dining room, though, definitely plops you right into the movie. You almost feel like you’re going to see Harry, Hermione, and Ron either sitting at a nearby table, or walking through the front door. The Three Broomsticks offer up a good variety of food, from chicken fingers and fries for the little muggles or wizards in your brood to traditional English food such as fish and chips, Cornish pasties, and Shepherd’s Pie. Another franchise favorite: Hog’s Head is the next stop. Just another place to get some butter beer. After Hog’s Head, there were various ‘shops’ that you’ve read about, but that are not open to the public to actually go in. But, with talk of expansion to the Wizarding World within the next year, or so, it leaves me to wonder if maybe they will actually open any of these store fronts to the public. One store I would love to be able to go inside of is Gladrags. In the shop windows they have Hermione’s dress from the Yule Ball, as well as Harry’s dress robes. Another shop that would be awesome to go into is Scrivensaft’s Quill Shop. While they do offer us the chance to go into the Owlery (which we’ll get to later), I think opening up the Quill Shop would open up the opportunity to buy more unique types of stationary, and ease some of the traffic flowing into the Owlery.

Now, it’s on to Hogwarts. And there are no disappointments here! The castle itself is beautiful. Being from Florida, and having driven past it a number of times before actually going, I’ve been able to appreciate the beauty from afar, but to actually step foot on the grounds of a castle that we’ve all at least heard about was seriously an amazing experience. The queue to get there takes you through Herbology, and gives you a chance to see the Mandrake root. Thankfully these weren’t screaming, but it was a really awesome detail they added. And it’s the details that really make the Wizarding World come to life. If the walk through Hogsmeade somehow didn’t manage to impress you (which, might I add, is pretty impossible), then Hogwarts will definitely do it. The counters for each of the houses to determine who wins house cup is really very beautiful. And of course, Gryffindor and Slytherin are the houses in the lead, with Gryffindor having a slight edge. While there’s obviously no way Islands of Adventure has enough room to fully have every detail of the castle in place (ie: the moving staircases, and the separate entrances for each house), it does give you a good taste of what we’ve seen in the castle. They have tons of pictures on the walls; moving and still, and they did add in a small set of stairs that could easily be connected to a moving staircase. There is also a common area for Gryffindor, and again, you almost feel like you’re going to run into the trio, or even the prankster Weasley boys. One really awesome part was being able to go inside Dumbledore’s office. There really is no detail left out here. Well, the only thing that I don’t remember seeing that I thought would be cool to see was Fawkes (though you can buy a stuffed toy version of Fawkes). They even have a video image of Dumbledore set up on a see through screen that greets you. And they have it set up to where, unless you try and take a picture of him, you really feel like Dumbledore is in the office with you. The next room you’ll come to is the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom. Here, you’ll finally get your chance to see the trio; just the same way you get to see Dumbledore.
From here, you’ll end up in the Room of Requirement ready to take a ‘flying’ journey through Harry’s world. Hogwarts contains the ride called The Forbidden Journey. Using a four person seated ‘car,’ the ride combines video screen technology with animatronics to create a new look at some of your favorite places from the franchise, as well as give you an up-close-and-personal look at some unforgettable characters. The way the ‘car’ is set up, you’re sitting four across, which allows for the animatronics to be very close. I’m sure my friend wouldn’t mind me saying that she did scream a few times. If you scare easily, this ride may not necessarily be for you. Also, if you get motion sick easily, you may want to skip this one as it will leave you with a very queasy feeling. But, it is a great ride; one that we went on twice. The ride empties into Filch’s Emporium, which is another awesome shop. You can find plenty of Gryffindor Quidditch merchandise, Hogwarts merchandise, stuffed animals, pins, the Harry Potter books and movies, and you can even buy a Marauders map. While two out of three of the rides aren’t necessarily kid friendly, there is the Flight of the Hippogriff. We were going to try that one out, but with a 40 minute wait, and only about 5 minutes worth of a ride, it didn’t seem worth it in our minds. The only other ride was the Dragon Challenge (which, if you’ve ever been to Islands of Adventure before, is just Dueling Dragons with a Harry Potter make over in the queue). Still fun no matter what, but nothing really new there. Granted, it was cool to walk through the queue and see what the Champions saw while they waited to take on their dragon.
Of course there were also shows. Unfortunately the only one we saw even a little bit of was The Frog Choir, which was pretty cool. It consisted of five wizards singing, two of which were holding frogs on pillows, and one that was leading the choir. They had beautiful voices. From there, we ran into more shops; most notably, Ollivander’s. As everyone knows, Ollivander’s is where everyone gets their wand; well, where all the wands pick their owners. The line was pretty long, as there are only so many people who can go in at a time, due to the size of the shop, as well as the fact that a show is going on inside. Again, it’s one of those things we passed up, but will catch next time. But, from what we understood, one person is picked out of the crowd to experience what Harry went through when he got his wand. From there, the ‘show’ empties into the Owlery, which you can also go into without having to go through Ollivander’s. The Owlery is connected to Dervish and Banges, both of which offer up quite an assortment of merchandise. The Owlery carries a selection of wands, as well as a variety of stationary and journals. In Dervish and Banges, you can buy a robe for your particular house, the Monster Book of Monsters, a Quibbler, a Triwizard tournament cup, as well as a shirt to represent your house. Oh, and I can’t forget brooms; Dervish and Banges is your shop for your broom needs. In fact, when you look up, you’ll notice three different broom models connected to posts to keep them from flying around the shop.

All in all, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter definitely lives up to all the hype. It’s got something for everyone, even if you’re not necessarily a fan of the franchise, you’ll still enjoy the food, the butter beer, and the rides. It was a great day, and I’m definitely looking forward to returning to experience it all over again!

Zen and the Art of Sitcom

I have been writing sitcoms for twenty-five years. During this time, I have learned a few things. Practical things. Do's and don't's if you will. For instance, do hire actors based on talent not looks. Somewhere between take eight and take fifteen, you will be hating both yourself and the gorgeous, but clueless ingenue who got the job because she looks exactly like what you imagined the character looks like... or worse, like the kind of woman you could live happily ever after with. Don't waste time with a marginal joke that forces the actor to twist him or herself into a pretzel in order to make funny. It's much better to work a little harder and write a great joke that the actor can do in their sleep. This also allows the actor to be well-rested when it comes time to renegotiate his or her contract. Do try to be kind to the power players. The movers and shakers. The people who tell you how to do your job. After they fail in network TV, they will remember you fondly while they're busy tanking fledgling internet companies. But perhaps more important than do's and don't's is learning to trust in the mysterious power of intuition. The soft inner voice that guides you to a better outcome than experience and logic could ever provide. This is what I call the Zen of Sitcom. The willingness to allow transcendence to play a part in the making of a TV show. Try it sometime in your own job. It can be the source of great inspiration. A word of warning though: it's not foolproof. If your business collapses or you wind up getting fired, you're probably hearing the same voice I listened to when I created Grace Under Fire, Cybill and four or five TV pilots that now function as landfill. If it's possible, try not to listen to that one. As inner voices go, it's kind of a douche.

As you may or may not know we here at SweetonGeeks have bought a store in Arcadia, Florida called the Arcadia Opera House . It is an old theater that is now a giant 9000 square foot antique shop with over 16 rooms on top of the main theater, stage and balcony. It was built in 1905 and is in near original condition. And....wait for it.....it is haunted. (shivers with ghost geek delight) I can't believe this place is all our all the time. You can read more about the original history here and all about the haunted stories here. It is an amazing structure and the renovation is no small task. But who better to tackle such a project then our very own James, the OCD superhero of the antique/restoration world. No detail is too small to obsess over!

Anyhoo, as we have been cleaning the place up we have stirred up the spirits as well. I've had a number of personal experiences, from hearing a woman singing, to having someone say "Hi" right in my ear when I walked past the Zoltar machine. We've hosted a number of paranormal teams and have joined back up with our friends Team-Phenomenon! They came on Oct. 23 and spent the night. Unfortunately there was a bog party at the banquet hall across the street which made evidence gathering difficult but several team members had personal experiences. We have also hosted SWFLPR, PRGT, SWFLPI and some other amateur groups with no formal affiliation. It's all soooooooo exciting. Come by to see us! Soon we will be hosting tag along ghost hunts so keep your eyes peeled!

300. An auspicious card. To me. At the very least it represents my having had a hand in writing and producing three hundred episodes of television. Some of which were pretty good. Some of which were... in color. Additionally, it means that on three hundred separate occasions I tried to turn my one second of network time into a form of entertainment. Or, if you prefer, a form of inflammation. Some of the vanity cards were, like the TV shows preceding them, pretty good. Others were... grammatically correct. But still. 300. That has to count for something, right? That's gotta be worth some kind of attaboy. I'm certainly not being paid to write these things. In fact, there are several people at CBS and Warners who'd probably pay me to not write them. (Mental note: Look into setting up a blind auction predicated on the idea that, for the right price, I would permanently change my written vanity card to a cute picture. Maybe a photo from my most recent colonoscopy. Let's see what the market fetches.) Anyway, this is my three hundredth vanity card. I really wanted to write something that was as important as the number seemed to imply. I'm pretty sure I've failed. Attaboy!

Everywhere I look I see Ned Beatty. Not literally Ned Beatty. What I keep seeing appears to be his doppelgänger, or his evil twin, or a Ned Beatty wannabe, or simply some paunchy, red-faced, middle-aged sonuvabitch who has either the great misfortune or great good luck to look just like Ned Beatty. I would also venture to say that if you were to casually glance over your shoulder, you too would see -- not now, wait until it's cool... okay, now. See it? There are a suspicious number of Ned Beattys wandering around this country. If one were conspiratorially- inclined, one might even think that someone is growing a secret army of the rotund little bastards. Why? To what end? Retribution on an apocalyptic scale for the lifelong mocking the real Ned Beatty endured after appearing in the sodomy scene in Deliverance? Whatever the purpose, there's ample reason to be afraid. The only reassurance we can have is the knowledge that it's not nearly as scary as a whole bunch of Warren Beattys running around.

I didn't go to my 40th high school reunion. I agonized over the decision. Part of me wanted to go simply to take a victory lap. Part of me thought that to be a most unworthy motivation for traveling across the country in a private jet with a full head of hair, a 32 inch waistline and a beautiful woman almost half my age. Part of me wanted to see how my classmates turned out after decades of life. Part of me was simply frightened by the mortality issues implied by "decades of life." Part of me did not want to revisit memories of that sad, alienated kid whose best idea for attending the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance was sitting on the handball court swilling Southern Comfort and then blundering into the gym until a teacher threw him out on his ass, after which he threw up on his shoes. Part of me was simply worn out from work and feared the reunion would culminate with a debilitating, schadenfreude-enducing stroke near the punch bowl. Part of me truly wanted to enjoy the company of the people I grew up with. Part of me feared being judged by them, even if the judgment was positive. Well, it's too late now. The reunion is over. Now there's a part of me that has quietly begun to agonize over going to the 50th. And a part of me that regrets not going to the 40th in case I'm dead by the 50th. And a part of me which is thoroughly exhausted by the part of me that worries and thinks too much. But that part of me writes sitcoms and vanity cards so the exhausted part of me just has to suck it up. And yet there's still another part of me that merely watches all the other parts with tender, paternal amusement. Part of me thinks that's my spiritual part - the loving, non-judgmental, ever-present witness. Part of me thinks that if I'm still alive for my 50th, that part would have a good time at the party. Re-reading this card now, part of me thinks I should be heavily medicated.

Him: We kind of got rained out of the art fair though. I was hoping to spend more time wandering around Ann Arbor, but we ended up just going back to my place.

Her: It was fun though- we got to sit and watch a movie- though in general, I don't think that movies are a good first date, it was a movie more to talk and laugh about than to watch, and we had fun

Him: Yeah, I agree- you’re not really getting to know each other when you're watching a movie, so I'm generally against them. Especially in theaters, where it's dark, and you have to be quiet. It worked out pretty well though. We got to snuggle up.

Her: *blush* Yeah, that was nice too.

Her: I think there was a bit of chemistry there, kind of like those little junior chemistry kits we had when we were kids. Except, maybe not so many test tubes.

Her: Yeah, like sodium and water.

Him: Volatile!

Him: Yes. there was winking and nudging.

7) Where do things stand now?

Her: Well, they aren't really standing, more rolling along at a good pace.

8) Any advice to you fellow geeks on how to score the sweet geeky loving?
Him: Burst out of your comfort bubble, and expect rejection. It's a numbers game! You're bound to fail more times than you succeed, but it only takes one successful attempt. Also, take showers, wash yourclothes, and clean your room...damn hippies.

Her: Kind of, yeah. Just be confident, I guess, and throw yourself out there even when you feel like you're not sure you're ready. And don't stare at the Woman in the Red Dress. She's a part of the MATRIX and she'll kill you at the first opportunity.

I am taking this directly from the amazing Geek Girl Diva, an amazing and favorite girl geek blog I read. It pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter of the Adrienne Curry grope/crime.

An Open Letter to the idiots saying Adrianne Curry "asked for it".
I'm going to preface this by saying I'm angry and I'm sure other people have said this more cogently than I will. I'll even admit I don't have all the details. But I've read @AdrianneCurry's tweetstream and what I read was appalling enough for me to chime in.

If you're not aware, Adrienne was assaulted at Celebration V by a guy who thought it was just dandy to stick his hand up her skirt and grope her while she was at the con and cosplaying as Slave Leia.

That, on its own, is enough to piss me off.

But the topper here is that there are people telling Ms. Curry that she "asked for it" because of the way she was dressed.

Seriously? SERIOUSLY?

Let me break this down for anyone who, for a moment, agrees with that sentiment.

1) In what world is it ever okay to touch a woman, especially in an intimate way, without express permission?

2) We're talking about a woman who was dressed in a Slave Leia costume at a Star Wars convention. Forget the fact that the "you were asking for it" sentiment is bullshit on its face, we're talking about a woman wearing a costume from the fandom being represented at the convention.

3) The guy was arrested, as he should have been, because it was ASSAULT. Your opinions on the validity of that arrest aren't the point -- the fact is the cops (and Adrianne) saw it as assault and that's what matters here.

We're talking about a geek gal, dressed for a Star Wars con, who got groped and was both physically and mentally wounded. Before you open your mouth to offer anything but condolences, ask yourself what you'd be thinking if she was your sister, or your girlfriend, or your mom.

Because women of all ages go to cons and cosplay -- normally feeling pretty safe in the belief that they're surrounded by people who understand and respect them.

So, if you're reading this and you were one of the people who thought Adrianne "asked for it", do me a favor? Apologize to the lady.

It Bears Repeating ~ Why Geeks and Nerds are Worth It

In the wide world of dating, there are many options. Do you go for the flashy guy with the smooth smile, or the dude in the corner typing away on his laptop? The following are reasons why I think my fellow females should pay more attention to the quiet geeks and nerds, and less attention to the flashy boys. (from a girls point of view)

While geeks and nerds may be awkward, they’re well-meaning 9 out of 10 times. That smooth dude with the sly grin and the spider hands? Wonder what HIS intentions are… plus, I’ve never had a geek guy not call me when he said he would. Score major points THERE.
They’re useful. In this tech-savvy world, it’s great to have a b/f who can make your laptop, desktop, and just about anything else that plugs into a wall behave itself.
They’re more romantic than they’re given credit for. Ok true, their idea of romance might be to make up a spiffy web-page with all the reasons why they love you, with links to pics of you and sonnets and such… but hey. It lasts longer than flowers, plus you can show your friends.
Due to their neglected status, there are plenty to choose from. You like ‘em tall and slender? There are plenty of geeks/nerds who are. You like ‘em smaller with more meat on their bones? Got that too.
They’ve got brains. Come on now, how can intelligence be a bad thing?
Most are quite good at remembering dates. Like birthdates and such, especially if they know it’ll make you happy. Due again to their neglected status, they’re more attentive than guys who “have more options”. Plus, with all that down time without a steady girlfriend, they’ll likely have mental lists of all the things they’d love to do once they GOT a girlfriend.
Sex. Yep. Sex. I’m not really familiar with this myself, but I’ve friends who’ve been intimate with geek guys and it’s raves all around. They say a virgin wrote the Kama Sutra… all that time thinking about sex, imagining sex, dreaming about sex, (they are male after all) coupled with a desire to make you happy? Use your imagination.
They’re relatively low-maintenance. Most can be fueled on pizza, Twinkies and Mt Dew. No complicated dinners needed here, so if you’re not the best cook, eh. Can you order a pizza?
Most frequent bars as often as slugs frequent salt mines. You won’t have to worry much about your geek guy getting his “groove” on with club hotties because, frankly, he’ll be too busy rooting around under his computer wondering where that spare cable went. You won’t have to worry about him flirting with other women because, 9 out of 10 times, he’ll zip right by them in a perfect b-line towards the nearest electronics store. I’ve seen this happen. Girl: “Eww. Victoria Secret’s Models… They’re so skinny. How is that feminine? You can see her ribs!”
Geek Guy: “ooooooo…”
Girl: “Hey!” *notices he is staring lustfully towards the computer store*
Geek Guy: “What?”
Girl: “Never mind…”
Although he may not want to go to every outing with you, you can arrange swaps, as in, you’ll go to his Gamer Con dressed as an elf princess if he’ll take you to the ballet. Plus, if he doesn’t want to go someplace with you, you won’t have to worry much about what he’s up to. You’ll probably come home to find him asleep on his keyboard in a sea of Mt. Dew cans with code blinking from the screen. It’s ok. He’s used to this. Just toss a blanket over him and turn out the light.
His friends aren’t jerks. I can’t stress this enough. You’ll more likely get “Omg! A GIRL!! Can I see?!” than “Hey hot stuff back that ass up here and let me get some grub on…” They’re awkward geeks too and will, 9 times out of 10, treat you with the utmost respect and, more than likely, a note of awe. A cute girl picked one of their clan to date? It could happen to them! Hope! Drag some of your single girlfriends over, open up a pack of Mt. Dew, crack open the DnD set and get working. Nothing impresses geek guys more than a girl who can hack-n-slash (well ok maybe if she can code… a geek can dream).
They’re rarely if ever possessive. They trust you, so you can be yourself around them. You like to walk around the house in a ratty t-shirt for comfort? He won’t care. He does too! They won’t get pissy if you don’t wear make-up or don’t want to bother primping your hair. If you gain a few pounds, they won’t try their best to make you feel like crap.
They’re usually very well educated. Physics majors and the like. See #5. You won’t have to listen to him blathering on about his car (ok maybe a little), he’ll have loads of other interesting things to talk about. Politics, world events, how much the chicken burgers down at the local place rock, so long as you douse them in hot sauce…
You’ll almost never have to hear, “Yaw dawg whazzap!!” plop out of their mouths. Unless it’s in jest. They spell properly, use correct punctuation, and are able to tell the difference between the toilet and the floor. They almost never get “wasted”, so you won’t have to worry about coming home to find him and his friends passed out on the floor amidst a pile of beer bottles. Mt. Dew cans, perhaps…
And the final reason why geeks and nerds make great boyfriends: They actually give a damn about you. Not how you look (though that’s a plus), not how skinny you are, not how much make-up you primp yourself up with, but they like you for you. That kind of thing lasts longer than “DaMN baby you got a fine ass!!!” Believe me.

Okay, so maybe I'm stretching it a bit here, but you understand. To horny teenage geeks, even our safe haven, speculative fiction, was not safe from the transformation taking place within. To quote Revenge of the Nerds, "All jocks think about is sports. All nerds think about is sex."

My first romantic kiss happened, at all places, a Christian summer camp. Summer camp is a great place for the young geek to step outside his shell and try out different personalities and skills. In my case, 1979 was the summer I got to be the most popular kid at camp.

Every summer I went to Camp Monadnock in Jaffrey, New Hampshire with my best friend Geoff. It is a glorious place located at the base of Mt. Monadnock and offers everything from horseback riding, fishing, and hiking to other wilderness-type things. This was what kids did before video games, for you S.O.G.ers under 30. I fondly remember that particular summer because of Darcy Morgan.

Ah, Darcy. Hair like spun Latimun. A smile to make a Vorlon weep.

The “good” kids were being tormented by an older bully. In a rare moment of courage while being accosted in the lunch line, I used judo, a discipline I had just started to study, to toss him on his ass. Humiliated, he left us alone the rest of our stay and Princess Darcy rewarded me by dragging me off to her castle to make-out (okay, it was a covered wagon. Mario Brothers wouldn’t be invented for another few years.) We kissed for what seemed like forever while everyone else was in the prayer circle. Yeah, I had some good old fashion Christian guilt after that, but for a first kiss, it was magical. Darcy didn’t return the following summer, and I’ve spent years trying to track her online, to no avail. (You women and your married names.)
It would be almost two years later before I got my first girlfriend, Kristen. Kristen was different than Darcy in many ways. Taller, thinner and wearing those sexy librarian glasses. You know the ones guys; like Janine Melnitz from Ghostbusters. We had a great relationship until I blew it.

One night, Kristen and her best friend Laura were having a sleep over and called me in a panic. Apparently, they were playing with a Ouija board, something my folks had warned me was a tool of the devil. They were crying because all the lights in the house had gone out and they were worried about some spirit roaming the hall outside their bedroom door. Before I could say anything, the line went dead. I freaked. I thought Satan had eaten my girlfriend. I started praying and called the police. And then Kristen and Laura called back… laughing. It was all a joke.

I broke up with her. God, I was naive! I never had another girlfriend all through high school due to my geek status. Her family moved away before the next school year and I never got a second chance. I only recently found her to apologize. Facebook is good for unresolved issues.

Kristen and I had only ever kissed, too nervous was I to even try anything else. To quote Yoda, “Horniness leads to erections, erections lead to embarrassment.” Okay, maybe that was in American Jedi, but you get the point. I didn’t want to embarrass myself with a girl.

So, what do I do? Embarrass myself the first time I got past first base.

At age 14, my failed attempt to score was with girl who wouldn’t even admit we were seeing each other, less it ruin her reputation. Let’s call her Ms. S to protect that reputation to this day. Ms. S would invite me over to listen to REO Speedwagon albums. It was a summer of “Riding the Storm Out,” for sure. One warm afternoon, we took a ride on ATV and found a spot behind an elementary school to make out. Much to my amazement, Ms. S slid her hand inside my shorts.

Okay, this is weird, I thought. What do I do next?

I tried to reciprocate. With images of the Trial of the Treebeast from Flash Gordon fresh in my mind, I timidly inserted my hand past her waist band and found “it.” Still too naive, that’s all I did; touch it. Then I moved my hand back out. She did the same. Clothes were never removed, no pleasure was achieved by either party and bored, Ms. S stopped inviting me over for make-out and REO sessions. I still can’t hear “[And I’m] Gonna Keep on Lovin’ You” without a tear rolling down my cheek.
The point of all this, as I’m sure you’re all wondering, is that sex is a lot like attacking the Death Star. A lot of brave, but scared, men have tried attacking that trench, only to be shot down, or worse, impact on the surface.

Hey, that reminds me of the first time I tried to lose my virginity. But that’s a story for another time.

Two earth shattering events happened to me in 1977. I saw Star Wars for the first time and I found out where babies come from. Needless to say, I haven't been the same since. Both first times left me more confused than the ending of Lost.

At age 8, my world of entertainment, to that point, had consisted of The Munsters and Scooby-doo. My Aunt took me and my cousin to see a matinee of Episode IV that summer and I walked out of the theater having no more understanding of what I'd seen than I do now about string theory. I remembered believing the big hairy guy was the hero and there were lots of explosions.

Apparently, the film had made enough of an impression though, that it was all I could talk about. My parents to bought me something called "Action Figures.” All the stores had left were Darth Vader, C3PO and R2-D2. Still having little concept of the movie, I had C3PO beating up Darth regularly. Soon after, I discovered the Star Wars comics and, armed with information, went to see the movie again. And again. And again. Over the years, I’d read everything I could related to Star Wars. And though it, I discovered a love of science, literature, film, music and even developed my imagination by creating intense stories with my now much larger figure collection. It was a large portion of my life and I infused into everything I did, including friends and relationships. I was well on my way to nerddom.

Which is why a classmate decided to burst my bubble about sex.

I'd never really given much thought to procreating at that point. My parents were Christian Ministers and things like that were not to be discussed until I reached some age of accountability. My guess was that age would have been 20. A kid in my school decided it was more fun to show how cool he was by explaining how a boy's thing goes in a girl's hole and what it was called in glorious terms. A light bulb went on as for years I had confused the meaning of “the word” for failing a task and couldn’t understand why I got into trouble for saying someone "fucked out of school."

Like with Star Wars, I became obsessed with finding out more. My parents wouldn’t share and my classmates kept their knowledge secret; a way to hold themselves above me. So, I learned about opposite sex by reading as well. We traveled a lot and you'd be surprised how many Playboys got left behind in hotel rooms. Those plus the Bee-Line novels at truck stops helped me understand how much I still had to learn. Books became videos like Tarzan the Ape Man with Bo Derek, my first spank flick. The crux was managing a video store with one of those magical back rooms drunks and old married guys conspicuously slipped into. With access to porn, I was acquiring knowledge, but still had no actual experience.

You see, my one obsession hampered the other. Growing up in small town Wisconsin, you might think kids were opened-minded and embracing of my uniqueness… but you'd be wrong. I was neither gnarly nor bitchin’. (Hey, it was the 80’s.) Recently, I found out that girls who might have been interested in me were warned off, saying they'd lose their popularity if seen with me.

In all fairness, I didn't make it any easier. I tried to fit in, but in a high school known for football, wrestling and Future Farmers of America, I stuck out like a Narn at a Centauri mixer. I could have chosen a popular path, but it wasn't in my nature. After seventh grade, and until my senior year, I had very few real dates. And I turned off most girls with talk of movies and comics and video games. The couple that gave me a chance found my awkward attempts to seduce them humorous and chose to give their virginities to upper classmen, instead.

I hid farther into my imagination, reading and creating stories; something that serves me well now as an author. I did finally get the first real girlfriend at age 17, lost my virginity, and eventually stopped being as awkward around women. I learned how to hide my dorkiness to get laid, to get girlfriends and, eventually even get married.

My then wife accepted my weird tastes for things like anime and comics and, God luv her, even tried her hand at tabletop RPGs. However, we were incompatible on many levels, and so a few years later, I was spit back into the world of dating like Boba Fett out of the sarlacc.

So, here I am, searching for the Leah to my Han, the Zelda to my Link, the Sally to my Jack, and if you'll let me, I'll share with you some insights I've gathered over the years about trying to find love somewhere between the sheets and the stars.

Hi my name is Brett and like many of you I am a movie geek. For those that don’t know, we line up opening night for the latest blockbuster, we seek out that little indie film that’s in limited release, we love Tuesdays because that’s when the new releases hit the video store, if you put a couple of us in a room together and we’ll argue about what our favorite film is while trying to convince the others their choice is wrong, but always in a friendly way, and we scan the internet for memorabilia and collectables from our favorite films, right now I’m wearing a replica of the ring that Ed Harris wore in the Abyss, just incase I find myself in need of stopping a hydraulic water tight door from trapping me in rising water. You never know, right?

In future posts I’m going to talk about my life as a movie geek, the screenings I attend, people I’ve met, my ridiculous DVD collection, hopefully it will be entertaining. To start I think it would be good to go back to the beginning and examine what started me on this road.

Summer 1977 my father takes me to the Grauman’s Chinese theater in Hollywood to see some space movie. I knew something was coming out, I’d seen a commercial with a big hair bigfoot, flying a spaceship, but I was really into Space 1999 and Star Trek so I thought I had my fill of scifi. We sat on the left side of the theater about six rows back from the screen and I think it was a Thursday about one in the afternoon. I was amazed by the theater it was the biggest I’d ever seen and lets face it at nine I’d seen it all. I asked my father “how they painted the ceiling.” He said “they probably had R2D2 do it.” “What’s a R2D2?” The lights went down and after the 20th Century Fox logo and the cryptic “A Long Time Ago, in a Galaxy Far, Far Away” my life changed forever. I ended up seeing Star Wars over a hundred times between the summer of 77 and when it was re-released in 78.

It was followed by Superman the next summer, and several more in the years to follow, it became an event. If you wanted to see the film opening weekend you camped out at your local theater, after all there were no multiplex’s back then. I miss that when you camped out the line was full of like minded people. I remember lining up one early morning in 1982 for Star Trek II the Wrath of Kahn. Me and my father got there at 8am for a 1pm show and there was already twenty or so people in line. We all talked about Star Trek, one guy was going to run to Carl’s Jr. for some breakfast, he ended up taking everyone’s order and bringing back food for everyone.

I really miss that part, now you can order your tickets and in the case of the Arclight reserve your seat so no waiting is necessary. Funny thing is you end up in a theater full of people you’ve probably talked to, or flamed on some forum over which Star Wars or Star Trek film is the best (Empire Strikes Back, and Wrath of Kahn incase you wondered) but never met in person.

By the time I got to high school I had the means to get myself to the movies and I caught everything 82 to about 85 were the best years, so many good films some got lost in the mix. Innerspace, Explorers, Goonies, The Last Starfighter, Conan the Barbarian, Beastmaster, Ghostbusters, Buckaroo Banzai, The Sword and the Sorcerer, and I could go on and on.

Now that I’m an adult (age wise anyway) I’m happy to see movie geeks my age take their kids to see the geek films or modern classics, continuing the line so to speak. I like to imagine that this tradition has been around since the advent of film, that Chaplin, Lloyd, Keaton, the Marx Brothers, were all passed down through families, I hope there are others that snicker every Christmas when they hear the name Santa Clause and think “You can’t fool me, there ain’t no sanity clause.”

There’s this fear in Hollywood today that the internet, DVD/Blue Ray, and On Demand will kill the movie going experience. I know that could never happen because there is no comparison to the theater experience. For movie geeks it will always be a shared experience. Late last year I attended a screening of The Last Starfighter at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica California, It’s been on TV countless times, there’s now two versions on DVD, yet it was sold out, a 24 year old movie still packed the house. Why? Because we all wanted to share in the fun of seeing it on the big screen. So don’t worry Hollywood, as long as you give us a good product we’ll always show up.

So if any of this feels familiar, then you’re one of us… “ONE OF US! ONE OF US! ONE OF US!” And don’t worry you’re in good company, it’s been my experience that most movie geeks are intelligent, funny, good looking, all around great people. So keep an eye out for that movie you love so much, chances are you’re not alone and it’s screening somewhere.

I have to agree with Bit Rebel writer Diana Adams that the shoes make me drool a bit. Clunky 1940's heels ( my fav) made out of the gorgeous innards of computers! I, too, would kill to have a pair on display in my office.

I Used To Be Cool ~ By Nicole Bremer Nash

I love the bumper sticker that reads “I used to be cool” I’ve only ever seen it plastered on mini vans, indicating that the person driving said
Sienna used to have a hip life before she had children. Weekends full of illicit drugs and alcohol and strangers. Late nights used to have a different meaning before the driver had children.

For me, “I used to be cool” goes farther back than when I had my son. Though I’m certain many will beg to differ this point, my coolness waned when I fell in love with a Geek.

A long time ago, I used to be cool. I used to ride in the front seat of boys’ cars, and have fun dates that lasted into the wee hours of the night. I had a reputation for being brainy and bossomy and fun. In essence, I was cool.

Only, I wasn’t really. I didn’t hang with the “cool” kids… I was artistic and weird. I remember the first time I spent the night with a boy. We had a special Dungeons and Dragons event with our D & D group and had to get special permission from our parents to spend the night and stay up so that we could go on an epic quest. The only kissing that occurred that night involved the poisoned lips of my D&D rogue, taking out the competition in a popular pub in Barovia. I’ve never been good at role playing, but a few of my Facebook friends will remember that D&D game, and will likely admit that we thought we were cool at the time.

Even before that, I remember thinking that I was too cool for Geek guys. A Geeky kid asked me to a school dance, and I remember laughing about it to my Mom. I shuddered at the thought that I was so uncool that the class Geek would think he even stood a chance. My Mother admonished me for laughing. She told me not to ignore the Geek guys because those Geek guys would grow up to be far more interesting and successful than any of the cool boys that I was so smitten with.

Fast forward several years, and it turns out my Mom was right. I met my “home-Geek”; I refer to him as my home-Geek on a regular basis because it’s a take-off on the term “home-boy”. That proves how cool I used to be (doesn’t it?). I used to have home-boys; now the boys in my home jump on the furniture and refuse to eat green vegetables.

So I met this Geek guy and try as I did I just couldn’t tear my cool self away from the relationship. He was funny, and brilliant, and he introduced me to the wonders of video games, and he taught me how to use a computer in a way that is not fully dependant on Microsoft or Apple. I fell in Geek love, and was totally converted to the Geek way of life.

These days, I’m almost as Geeky as my Geek husband. I follow developments in open source software, and write about Geek culture. I regularly have more opinions on software giants than does my home-Geek. He still plays more video games than I do, but I do not mourn my Warcraft widowhood. I take advantage of the time to myself. It strikes me that Geeks tend to be more into their hobbies than other people I know. When those people ask me the secret to our marital bliss, I tell them that we both have hobbies and we allow each other the space to enjoy them. I appreciate that home-Geek has hobbies to occupy his time, and that he allows me to do the same.

My favorite thing about my home-Geek is that he is interesting. He listens to the news, he reads, he occasionally makes sculpted figurines of WoW and D&D characters. Together, we have educated ourselves on how to handle a zombie-apocalypse and stand a pretty good chance of survival. He introduced me to the wonders of Bruce Campbell’s chin, and he regularly corrects my inaccurate knowledge of Star Wars. His love for knowledge and fun extends into his parenting, and he educates our child with every conversation. From the political positioning in Star Wars to home chemistry experiments, home-Geek keeps us learning.

Falling head over heels in love with a Geek is the best thing that ever happened to me. I imagine that without his Geeky influence, I might have still been caught up in cool. That instead of having a partner who encourages me in my endeavors, no matter how Geeky, I would have ended up with somebody who acted as a constant judge of my interests. Turns out, my Mom was right. My Geek guy is way more interesting and successful (not just career-wise, but in living a full life), than any of the cool boys I was smitten with turned out to be. My life used to be cool; but thanks to my home-Geek, now my life is full.

These days, I’m almost as Geeky as my Geek husband. I follow developments in open source software, and write about Geek culture. I regularly have more opinions on software giants than does my home-Geek. He still plays more video games than I do, but I do not mourn my Warcraft widowhood. I take advantage of the time to myself. It strikes me that Geeks tend to be more into their hobbies than other people I know. When those people ask me the secret to our marital bliss, I tell them that we both have hobbies and we allow each other the space to enjoy them. I appreciate that home-Geek has hobbies to occupy his time, and that he allows me to do the same.

My favorite thing about my home-Geek is that he is interesting. He listens to the news, he reads, he occasionally makes sculpted figurines of WoW and D&D characters. Together, we have educated ourselves on how to handle a zombie-apocalypse and stand a pretty good chance of survival. He introduced me to the wonders of Bruce Campbell’s chin, and he regularly corrects my inaccurate knowledge of Star Wars. His love for knowledge and fun extends into his parenting, and he educates our child with every conversation. From the political positioning in Star Wars to home chemistry experiments, home-Geek keeps us learning.

Falling head over heels in love with a Geek is the best thing that ever happened to me. I imagine that without his Geeky influence, I might have still been caught up in cool. That instead of having a partner who encourages me in my endeavors, no matter how Geeky, I would have ended up with somebody who acted as a constant judge of my interests. Turns out, my Mom was right. My Geek guy is way more interesting and successful (not just career-wise, but in living a full life), than any of the cool boys I was smitten with turned out to be. My life used to be cool; but thanks to my home-Geek, now my life is full.
